Modafinil is a smart drug that promotes wakefulness and other cognitive functions but before using the medicine effect of Modafinil it one must be aware of the dos and don’ts while on this drug to obtain maximum benefits.

Modafinil is not a classical psychostimulant and was primarily prescribed for the treatment of:

It has also been proved to be effective in reducing fatigue, drowsiness, and tiredness in conditions such as cancer, depression, and multiple sclerosis.
Modafinil is instrumental in several cognitive functions like:
- Sharpening memory
- Improving focus and alertness
- Intensifying motivation
- Minimizing fatigue
Because it stimulates wakefulness it has been used off-label by professionals of various fields like day traders, entrepreneurs, astronauts, military personnel and the list goes on.
Side effects of Modafinil
When compared to other nootropics modafinil can be labeled as a safe and well-tolerated drug. No potential risk has been associated with long-term use of the drug to date. Some mild side effects may be observed in people introduced to the drug. Common Symptoms may look like
- Headaches
- Fluctuating BP
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Restlessness
- Anxiety
Some of the severe side effects which are less commonly noticed include:

1. Wake up early in the morning
It is advised to take modafinil within 6 A.M or as soon as you wake up because the half-life of modafinil is 10 to 12 hrs and in some cases goes up to 15 hrs. So, if it’s not taken early it will be difficult to fall asleep at the night.
Also, early morning’s mind is fresh and you are more productive and you feel energized the entire day.
2. Eat well nutritious food
One very important tip is to have your meals timely and at a fixed time of the day. Modafinil is known to suppress appetite so you may not feel hungry at your regular time but you have to remind yourself to eat your food because skipping meals can cause side effects like nausea and headache.
Also, it’s always good to skip the junk and be on healthy nutritious food because junk can have negative effects like slowing you down which you don’t want while being on the smart drugs.
3. Keep yourself well hydrated
Proper hydration is extremely important when you are on any kind of medicine. For modafinil, it is the best way to avoid any kind of side effects.
You might even want to put a reminder in your phone after every while for taking that needful sip of water. You might not even realize you have not drunk enough for the day and suddenly your mouth becomes dry and you are dehydrated followed by headache and nausea. Leave aside wakefulness and productivity you will be sick for the day. So, drink a lot of water!
4. Choose the right dose for you
Ideally, 100-200mg of the effect of Modafinil should be good for an individual. It is better to start with a lower dosage then increase the dose to 200mg eventually. Being said that, we are no medical experts here, this is just what we experienced ourselves. It’s always better to consult your doctor if you can.
Increasing the dose to 300 may give you very few more benefits. So according to me, the moderate dosage is what works best.
5. Avoid using modafinil frequently to prevent drug tolerance
Taking modafinil daily is not a very wise option. Experts suggest 1-3 days of dosage a week is what will give the most benefit. Although modafinil is not an addictive drug taking it daily may build up a drug tolerance. If taken daily within a couple of weeks you might notice the effects of the drug getting milder. So, it’s better if you go by alternate days in a week or less.
6. Avoid heavy workout
When on this smart drug it is advisable to skip the gym because you don’t feel the fatigue or exhaustion which makes you believe you can go about an extra mile. In doing so firstly you will overtire your body and you might feel joint pain and body ache once the effect wears out. Secondly, an excessive workout means you will be even more dehydrated. As it is, modafinil requires more water intake than normal. Working out may dehydrate you completely causing side effects to appear.
7. Don’t mix with alcohol
Mixing modafinil with alcohol is a strict no-no. Firstly the whole purpose of taking modafinil is to be productive whereas alcohol works in a completely contradicting manner. It is meant for relaxation and enjoyment. Secondly, alcohol and modafinil together are harmful to your liver. Prescription drugs do not mix well with booze and modafinil is no different.
8. Take caffeine in moderate amount with modafinil
Caffeine is known to complement well with smart drugs. Coffee is also an excellent performance booster. 1-2 cups of coffee a day with modafinil can significantly improve your productivity. Being said everything in moderation is good for you and anything in excess is bad.
9. Divide your dose throughout the day
We have experienced that modafinil dose when split through the day can give you wonderful effects. You can either split into 4 or 2 depending on your need. You could take one part post breakfast and one post-lunch if you go by ½ in that way your energy is evenly distributed throughout the day.
10. Do not mix modafinil with any other smart drugs
It is not okay to take modafinil with any other nootropics because that is unhealthy and might lead to severe complications. It is also a waste to combine a nootropic with modafinil because modafinil alone can yield benefits that can last about 15 hours.
